Howdy, I'm Sarah

I'm Sarah. I make web sites and do print design. My background is in journalism, including writing, photography, design and internet work. I've been doing Web and print design for several years. I specialize in clean, grid-based design. I'm based in Rome, GA, but I'm happy to communicate with you via phone and e-mail if you're somewhere else. In addition to design, I can also help with photography for your project, as well as writing information such as staff biographies and company histories.

Geordi, Jeeves and other interesting tweeple

Twitter, the micro-blogging platform that allows users to post short updates, and follow and respond to others’ updates, has exploded in popularity. Besides keeping up with friends and family, Twitter lets you get a peek at the lives of famous people. Many, many ‘celebrity’ accounts on Twitter are fakes, but there are plenty of real celebs who do tweet on a regular basis. Here are a few that I follow.

A simple, styled table

So how many elections did we have last year? Seems like at least a dozen, though it was probably only about half that. For the bigger elections, like the primaries and the November general election, the Rome News-Tribune had full results pages to show vote totals as they came in. In the smaller elections, though, I just made a simple HTML table that the numbers could easily be inserted into.

Corrections and regrets

The Stranger, an alternative paper from Seattle, recently ran a list of its corrections/regrets for 2008. Among my favorites: Dan Savage, the editorial director of The Stranger, does not regret a single word he wrote in the wake of Proposition 8. He does regret the dismal state of reading comprehension today, as evidenced by the confused reaction to some of what he wrote. Mr. Savage would like to state for the record: “Your inability to read isn’t evidence that I’m racist.”

And other things ending in 'olly'

hogfather

I watched “Hogfather” for the first time this weekend, and I forgot how much I love Death. I can’t think of another Discworld character I like better – though I love the City Watch. Guess I need to go get ‘Guards! Guards!’ – I’m still making my way through the older books (I read several of the newer ones then started over at the beginning). Anyway, I really enjoyed Death’s reaction to the socio-economic rules of holiday gifts.

A free online photo editor that's quite good

I don’t have Photoshop on my computer at work, but I’m constantly needing to edit photos. Our IT guy installed a copy of Gimp, but I don’t really like it at all, and it’s never worked properly on my machine, so I’ve been looking for another option. Luckily, I’ve found one I like a lot. Picnik is a Flash-based online photo editor that has both free and paid plans.
